Snapper Fishing in Melbourne
Fishing runs in the Cassar family. Chris grew up on charter boats alongside his father, Mark Cassar, one of the early operators in Melbourne’s snapper charter scene. Now a third-generation fisherman, Chris brings a lifetime of local experience fishing the waters of Port Phillip Bay, Western Port and the Mornington Peninsula.
Cassar Fishing Charters specialises in snapper fishing charters across Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula, targeting one of Victoria’s most iconic and exciting sport fish.
Our Melbourne snapper season begins to fire up from September, with the peak period generally running from October through January. We continue targeting snapper throughout the warmer months when conditions and fishing remain productive.
With two purpose-equipped charter boats, we offer both individual spots and whole-boat bookings. Whether you’re an experienced angler or catching your first snapper, our charters cater for all experience levels. Quality rods, reels, bait and tackle are supplied, so you can simply step aboard and fish.
Our snapper charters operate across Western Port and Port Phillip Bay, with departures available from Hastings, Mornington and Carrum. Being mobile allows us to choose the departure location based on where the snapper are fishing best and give our customers the best opportunity for a successful trip. Your exact departure location will be confirmed prior to your charter.
There’s nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of a big Victorian snapper loading up the rod. Our boats provide plenty of fishing room, comfortable seating and shelter, allowing everyone on board the opportunity to get involved.

A bit of a charter update as we head further into winter.
The weather is finally starting to play nice, and by the looks of the forecast we’ve got some cracking conditions coming up over the next week or so. Flat seas, light winds and, best of all, no rain on a couple of days. 👌
Over the next few weeks we’ll be putting plenty of effort into the local barrel bluefin tuna. It’s that exciting time of year where every day can be different, and if things keep progressing the way they have been, we should be in for some great fishing.
We’ll also be keeping busy with plenty of local calamari trips along with gummy and school shark charters. The squid have been fishing really well lately, and with the clear water we’ve had, it’s one of the best times of year to get amongst them.
For anyone who’s been asking about the next Barrel Bluefin Tuna Workshop, the next one will be towards the end of this month during the week (weather permitting). If it’s bucketing down with rain, I’m not standing there trying to teach while everyone gets soaked, so we’ll pick the best day when the forecast lines up. 😅

Both boats have been going flat out since last September out almost everyday since the weather allows, there is no off season anymore these days as we pretty much have an all year round tuna fishery plus all our local options it couldn’t be any better for us or our customers who want to fish anytime of the year we can make it happen.
I know it is still super early but due to a very demand on specific dates I have opened Snapper season online from October onwards for anyone wanting to secure there prime dates before they get booked.
Otherwise in the mean time our local trips will be going ahead as normal.

It’s been an unbelievable season down the coast off port fairy & Portland, but the past couple weeks fishing locally has been just as good if not better for our charters, so at this rate going forward we will be staying home and doing these trips out of our backyard.
I have just uploaded all of June for our barrel charters going forward if anyone is keen to jump on.
As for our barrel workshop trips we will be having another one of those most likely the 15th or 16th if that’s something that suits anyone.

3 years ago Frank & Michael drove down from Sydney and we launched the boat out of Apollo bay at 12:30pm as it was insanely rough we ended up getting 3 barrels that arvo.
Today was like déjà vu, went out late start 12:30pm and got the boys another 2 big barrel bluefin., biggest going 1950 to the fork unfortunately couldn’t get a weight but somewhere between that 130/140kg range.
What an insanely bloody good season this is wow.

Another insane day on the barrels.
We had the lures out for 30 seconds and had a triple hook up landed 2 loosing one and almost loosing the other one due a decent sized shark giving us that Victorian tax program.
The boys who booked the individual charter well done fellas paid off!

![A bit of a charter update as we head further into winter.
The weather is finally starting to play nice, and by the looks of the forecast we’ve got some cracking conditions coming up over the next week or so. Flat seas, light winds and, best of all, no rain on a couple of days. ?
Over the next few weeks we’ll be putting plenty of effort into the local barrel bluefin tuna. It’s that exciting time of year where every day can be different, and if things keep progressing the way they have been, we should be in for some great fishing.
We’ll also be keeping busy with plenty of local calamari trips along with gummy and school shark charters. The squid have been fishing really well lately, and with the clear water we’ve had, it’s one of the best times of year to get amongst them.
For anyone who’s been asking about the next Barrel Bluefin Tuna Workshop, the next one will be towards the end of this month during the week (weather permitting). If it’s bucketing down with rain, I’m not standing there trying to teach while everyone gets soaked, so we’ll pick the best day when the forecast lines up. ?
If you’ve already messaged me about coming along, could you please send me another message just so I can get a fresh list together and keep track of numbers. If anyone else is interested, flick me a message and I’ll put your name down as well.

Both boats have been going flat out since last September out almost everyday since the weather allows, there is no off season anymore these days as we pretty much have an all year round tuna fishery plus all our local options it couldn’t be any better for us or our customers who want to fish anytime of the year we can make it happen.
I know it is still super early but due to a very demand on specific dates I have opened Snapper season online from October onwards for anyone wanting to secure there prime dates before they get booked.
Otherwise in the mean time our local trips will be going ahead as normal.
Pm me for any questions regarding species to target coming up over the school holidays and beyond.

@daniel.nguyen86 has been chasing these fish with me since we first ever started targeting them back when we were super young taking the boat out by ourself back when the fish were hard to catch. And together after countless trips over the years couldn’t get it done but today we did.
Booked the boat for himself and got rewarded!

@ryder_stoll_fishing sneaking himself on as a second decky ended up on the rod landing his PB 104kg local barrel!

It’s been an unbelievable season down the coast off port fairy & Portland, but the past couple weeks fishing locally has been just as good if not better for our charters, so at this rate going forward we will be staying home and doing these trips out of our backyard.
I have just uploaded all of June for our barrel charters going forward if anyone is keen to jump on.
As for our barrel workshop trips we will be having another one of those most likely the 15th or 16th if that’s something that suits anyone.

3 years ago Frank & Michael drove down from Sydney and we launched the boat out of Apollo bay at 12:30pm as it was insanely rough we ended up getting 3 barrels that arvo.
Today was like déjà vu, went out late start 12:30pm and got the boys another 2 big barrel bluefin., biggest going 1950 to the fork unfortunately couldn’t get a weight but somewhere between that 130/140kg range.
What an insanely bloody good season this is wow.

Bit of organised chaos and also some actual chaos.
Only if today’s trip was filmed from start to finish would you really appreciate the lengths or swims I go to, to get a fish, it ain’t always pretty or warm but got the job done!

The fishing right now all up and down the coast is honestly crazy, we are blessed to have this fishery wow…
